Realization: Sometimes problems have a way to solve themselves out.

Complexity at its best. Patience is not my forte yet procrastination is something I live by.

I have this tendency that when I have been asked to do some thing in my capacity (officially especially) I try to do it asap, never mind if the job is big or small, urgent or not and report it back when done. Because of this, while I have come across with some compliments, I have got into trouble at times as well. Of late I have realised that instead of getting things done as and when it comes at my table, it is better if I analyse the situation and the nature of the work.

Sometimes when problems poke their heads in life, professional or personal, and one finds herself trapped, dont panic and start breaking your back worrying/working/sorting it. Take a breath. Use your conscience. Analyse the situation. Leave it aside for an hour, a day or a week and engage yourself in your day to day life. When working with a clear head, one finds the solution. And the best part is:  Sometimes problems, given time, have a way to solve themselves out.

One day

It is afternoon. And there is nobody home. For past few days, the weather has been awesome. Cool breeze with intermittent rains.
I have always longed for spending aimless afternoons at home with myself in a good weather but  work has never given this luxury to me. But today is special.
After endless internet surfing, finishing the book that I had been reading, TV-watching I lie in my bed. With my headon the end of the bed. From there, I have a view of the sun from the open door. The sky was pleasant blue with light super-white fluffy clouds all over. A part of me wonders how can such bright blue skies happen in the pollution filled metro. Afterall, I have seen such bright blue skies only in the beautiful, untouched hills.  But then who am I questioning on the colour of the sky of this big city. It might be the first time I am actually looking at the sky above. It might me the first time I have relaxed in the afternoon with no chores to do and no thoughts in my mind.
May be in September the sky always wears this beautiful colour or may be the salubrious weather is the reason or may be today is special.
And the heart said a quick thankyou to the universe for small pleasures like this.

Kids perspective

It was a dark July morning. Dark because of the grey clouds ready to pour any minute. It had rained last night as well. Drinking my morning tea in the verandah, I overheard my niece calling out her brother. Its around 7:00am in the morning and they were almost ready for their school. They lived next door to us.

T (yelling): Apppuuuuu, come outside.

Apu (came out from their home running to his sister's side)

T: Look Apu (pointing her finger to the ground.)
(in a mesmerised tone she added): WOW Snail!!!!!

*************************************

I was so amused with their conversation. As kids, we have such a sense of wonder for the world but as we grow old, we become so busy in the nothingness of life that we fail to notice the beauty around all of us.

This also reminds me of a poem I read long time back in internet. I found it apt for our busy lives and saved it. The post where I read it did not have the name of the author. So I dont know the author name but thanks to him/ her for such a piece of wisdom.

Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions!!!
Authour Unknown

When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard.
My kids see flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on.

When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money and I look away.
My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back.

When I hear Music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don't have much rhythm so i sit self-consciously and listen.
My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't know them, they make up their own.

When I feel wind on my face I brace myself against it. I feel it messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk.
My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it,  until they fall to the ground laughing.

When I pray. I say thee and thou and grant me this and give me that.
My kids say, "Hi God! Thanks for my toys and my friends. Please keep the bad dreams away tonight. Sorry, I don't want to go to Heaven yet. I would miss my Mommy and Daddy."

When I see a mud puddle I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty carpets.
My kids sit in it. They see dams to build, rivers to cross, and worms to play with.

I wonder if we are given kids to teach or to learn from.

I wish you Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions!!!

And it rained today

I am not a rain person. I have waxed eloquent my dislike for rains in this post . But then life throws you into situations where you have to face your dislikes and displeasures and you have to chew your own words.

We all know how monsoon has not been favorable this year because of El-nino effect and yada-yada. June came and gone by, July is half passed but we had yet to see a good rain this year. The weather has been extremely hot and humid. Everyday temperature sour to above 40 degrees. Add to it the extreme stickiness of humidity and frequent power cuts. Every night I cried for this cruel weather and power-cuts and every morning I prayed for rains so that at least we get some respite from this situation.

And just as we finished our lunch today, ZZ yelled from kitchen ( No he didnt cook the lunch. He was just there to put his plate in sink. I know there is no need of explanation but I just want to make clear in case doubts arise in your minds :p) "It's raining. Take out clotes from the cloth line outside". I literally jumped from my seat and opened the door. It was raining!!!! I danced my way to ZZ (imagine the bhangara and jumping singing "yay!!yay!! yay!! baarish ho rahi hain".

And I did the unthinkable. I have never voluntarily danced in the rain. I never have this urge to dance in the first showers of the rain that few of my friends have. But today I just wanted to go out and enjoy in rain. And did I have fun getting wet in rain? You bet.

I have never waited for rains like this in my entire life (may be waited for rains to go away) and I have never rejoiced its showers like today. But then one gotta face this cruel hot and humid weather to appreciate rains.

Am I a convert from non-rain person to rain-person. Cant say. But yes I do understand how rains are a harbinger of hope and joy in life.

Knowledge is Great

Like every other child in middle-class home in India in 1990s, the only professions that I aspired were Medicine/ Engineering. If the child is good in life sciences, medicine was the way to go and if Maths is the subject one loves, Engineering was the aim. Those who did not have any inclination towards any subject were not considered bright. Today things have changed. We are living in interesting times. With exposure of the world and job opportunities, a child is exposed to different subjects and branches and is channeling one's studies in new directions.

When I was a child I used to write diary. The description below my name used to be something like this:

Noble Prize Winner- Mathematics  (This was my favorite Subject then and I didnt know Mathematics is not any category for Nobel Prize)
Noble Prize Winner- Peace  (Oh that must be the Miss India in me speaking)
Noble Prize Winner- Literature  (The wish of the writer)
Oscar Award for Best Actress (uhmm the girl  sure had dreams. She still has.)

I grew up to become an Engineer with an heart for all things Art and Humanities. If I could study/ specialize in my subject, it would be Sociology (Humanities) from the second oldest university in the English-speaking world, and the world's third-oldest surviving university. As per this website, University of Cambridge is the 6th best educational institution in the field of Humanities and the best in UK.I have always been interested in the psychology of man , psychology of society and what better way to channelize my interest by studying the subject and that from this renowned institute. The study of Sociology would help me in understanding of the public policy and social beliefs and the parities that exist among different societies.Sociology provides the rich picture of how the social world works.
I read about the Cambridge university in some English story-book (I reckon it was part of the biography of Jawahar Lal Nehru of his young years- a part of our English textbook curriculum) in my childhood and being the dreamy person I used to be and I am, I have imagined many a times of myself studying in the prestigious institution.
To me, Cambridge University is the ultimate university. The university where each stone speaks of history, where every path was taken by the intelligentia who influenced the world, where the classrooms and laboratories are filled with legends, where the air is enriched with the lives of its great students- from Srinivasa Ramanujan to Stephen Hawking, from Charles Darwin to Amartya Sen, from Charles Babbage to Salman Rushdie. Be it any field, the alumni of Cambrige have made their mark.

And if the history itself is not enough, look at the view of one of the colleges of Cambridge University
The panoramic view of King's College, Cambridge
It would be such a dream-come-true moment for me if this happens. And if its academia, architecture  and heritage is not enough, the current Duke and Duchess of Cambridge elevate the charm of Cambridge in itself.

Late Bloomer

Today I am sharing some secrets here...

I watched "The Sound of Music" after my marriage.

I read "Charlotte's Web" last year.

I got to read "The Little Prince" this January only.

"Daddy Long Legs" is the book which I started and finished in a day and that is today.

I went through the passage of childhood without the oppurtunity to read these books and movies. I have yet not a read a single "Fantastic Four" series or "Agatha Christie" or other young adult book. It was not that I was not into books in my student days. I had my monthly dose of youth magzines, comics and I used to read english stories from the course books of my friends of other schools and curriculam. But I never got exposed to the classic children literature. May be it was location factor as there never were such book shops or good library and I never had peers and cousins who had read such books themselves. But better late than never. And slowly and stealthily I am reading my share of children literature and loving every second of it. I have said it earlier but let me say it aloud again-"One is never too old to read children book and watch animation movies". I downloaded the pdf format of "Daddy Long Legs" and read it in my office today and finished it at home just now. And I loved it. Every.single.line. I may count it in the list o my favourite books. The book inspire me to read "Little Women" (I have already seen the movie) even if possible in abridged form.

So if you have any more good books to recommend to a woman in the last pedestal of her 20s, please feel free to comment and share. You would definitely make the child in me very happy.:)

I would like to be there..

As I was running short of ideas to write about, I looked back at the Blogathon 2014 meme at this post and here I am.
"If I were allowed to travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?"

Let's change it to "f you were to be anywhere else in this very moment, where would it be?

Many years back I saw this photo while browsing the net. I think this photo was on some newsletter's photos of the year or Photos across the world.
The lilac flowers, the carefreeness of the girl and the closeness wth the nature-all makes this pic so beautiful, so lovely. It almost looks like a painting. Hats off to the photographer who captured this beautiful image. I normally dont do this, but I liked this photo so much that I saved it in my laptop. The photo is still with me:

So if I can be anywhere at this moment, I would like to be there among the lilac flowers, in the sunshine and cool breeze.

home dynamics

Have you heard the songs of "Highway" yet? A R Rehman has created magic.Every-time I hear its songs playing on some music channel on TV, I decide to download its songs. I had asked ZZ to download its songs, but since the guy is busy downloading and watching season after season of "Breaking Bad", my wish went on deaf ears. So I have still not downloaded the songs. Currently I am listening them on saavn.com.

Downloading a movie or song is not a big task. But inadverently instead of downloading something from internet myself or upgrading to latest version of software in mobile, I look for ZZ to do that for me.So this made me thinking about all the chores which I can do without any trouble but ask/plead/want/leave it to ZZ to do it for me and vice-versa.

So while ZZ is involved with downloading and upgradation of phone and computer softwares, I am the one who is entrusted for logging broadband complaints, if any. It is he who takes garbage out of home and washing clothes and sorting/ folding after they are washed and dried is my duty. It is he who fills the fridge bottles every day and cooking/ making tea is my duty though at times when I am too lazy to cook we swap our duties. Here I have to admit that ZZ is far far beter at organizing than I am. His wardrobe is always better organized and in case it is not, then there are heavy chances it is because of the presence of my clothes thrown among his.

Both ZZ and I have been brought up in the families where our fathers help women in kitchen and home in general. I wonder how does the dynamics work in your household. Any special tasks you leave it to your partner even though you can do it yourself?

Peaceful, Easy Feeling

  • after a long afternoon nap.
  • on a weekend morning, drinking our morning tea in the bed and reading newspaper.
  • on the drive back home from market/ trip in the night and radio playing soft old melodies.
  • while I am reading something on my side of bed and ZZ sitting beside me watching something on his laptop and I love the silence of those moments
  • the moment when I get to know that the boss is going to be on leave that day.
And how can I publish this post without sharing the you-tube video of the original "Peaceful Easy Feeling":

End of an era

Today marks the end of an era. Google Reader will no longer be available tomorrow onwards. The one-stop destination where I used to read all my favourite blogs and sites shall be no more. You have been a good companion for the past 3 years, Google reader and time has come to move on.
I exported all my stuff to "The Old Reader" but I am not finding it very user-friendly. It will take some time to adjust with it or to move to some new reader and you will be definitely missed.
It has been a long time since I am back to blogger. This urge to write about anything and nothing was so much, but finally it was the demise of Google Reader that prompted me back. And now that I am back, I plan to hang around a bit more.

Dec 21: read [LIVE]
Did you read a book this year that left you craving more when it was over?

Not any book I read this year but "The Time Traveller's wife" (read last year) made me left wondering even after it was over.

Dec 22: recharge [CREATE]
What did you do to recharge your batteries in 2012?

It must be the evil of internet  but this is how I wasted my time and this is what I used to recharge the batteries as well.

Dec 23: communicate [LISTEN]
Describe a conversation that you had this year. Why was it memorable?

It was talk with my father who told me when I was sharing with him the problems in office, to look forward, that this happens in everyone's work life and in life there will many more difficulties, you just keep calm and enjoy.

Dec 24: delight [HOPE]
How can you bring more joy into your life in 2013?
1) By not sweating over the small stuff.
2) By Meditation and exercise
3) By enjoying each day as it comes.
Oh, how I wish I do all this and more in the coming year and life..

Dec 25: give [CREATE]
What was the best gift you gave someone this year?
Though I love to receive gifts, I am not very good in gift giving department. I framed the nameplate that I had made, wrapped it up to gift it to ZZ for anniversary but didnt out any sticker over it. ZZ sniffed that his wife is giving him that colourful painting she has been making in his presence itself, found out that it was hiding in her wardrobe, pasted a sticker "Dear Wife, Happy Anniversary, from ZZ!!". Yes, its true. I received the gift that I made myself and that I was to give it to him. It was hilarious and I couldnt stop laughing when before I could bring it out, he handed me it. Talk about timing and most importantly, Sticker that proclaims who gifted who!!

Dec 15: quote [GROW]: What inspirational quote would you associate with this past year for you?
As per situation, i look for strength under different inspirational words. But one

"Get up & face the music"

Dec 16: replicate [CREATE]: What were you inspired to create/make this year based on something else? (i.e. a pin from pinterest, recipe from a friend, etc.)
It has to be a name plate drawing I made inspired from this blog. I also have a picture during the painting.

Dec 17: thank [HOPE]: Write that thank you note that you’ve been meaning to send this year… or would like to send next year…
This has to be to my parents. Even though I believe that it is important to "say" you love when you mean it, I have never  been open to my parents to tell them "I love you".
"I feel blessed to be your daughter. Thank you for all the unconditional love you showered on us, for all the scoldings we had in our childhood, for being the patient ears to our stupid and angry vents, for being the helping hands in our downfalls, for being the inspiration and motivation to look forward to, for being the best parents in the world. I love you!!"

Dec18: soak [LISTEN]: What have you soaked in this year? (Baths, sun, ideas?) How did it affect your mentality?
Sunshine. A loads of sunshine. During the walks in lunch break out in the garden. From the window panes in my office seat. In the little square of my balcony at home. Sunshine makes me warm and happy. It is the combination of sunshine and cold winds that makes my winters beautiful.

Dec 19: exercise [LIVE]: How did you live actively in 2012? What will you change in 2013?
I participated in 5k race this July. I think I have already boasted about  it earlier. So for at least a month I jogged religiously before the D-day and later it all stopped.
For 2013 I have plans. To do yoga every day, morning walks and running more.

Dec 20: reminisce [GROW] What distant memory/time did you find yourself longing for in 2012?
I didnt travel much this year. So at so many times I found myself longing to travel to new places , remembering the good old times of distant places with family/ friends.

Continuing from Part1 and Part2

Dec 12: toss [GROW]: 2012 was the last time for ________________

1) poor communication skills
2) planning more but travelling less
3) procrastination of important things

Dec 13: associate [LISTEN]: What blog/book/article spoke to you the most in 2012?

Though I didnt read much in 2012, I happened to read more women writers this year than I have earlier. So, from Helen Fielding, Sophie Kinsella, Caitlin Moran, Sudha Murty, Chitra Divakurni (currently reading) I got to read tales of female protagonists by female authors.I laughed and felt sad along with the heroines and wondered that thinking too much of small issues is not my problem it is of all women across the globe.

Dec 14: walk [LIVE]: Describe the path to a favorite place of yours to walk in 2012. What’s meaningful about the place or the journey

The city Delhi has so much to offer: bylanes of old city, ancient monuments, world-class transport system, shopping heaven, large gardens & parks, time-to-time cultural festivals that Delhi govt and other agencies organise. A place where history is in its stones and future in air. For long time, I had wanted to visit all important monuments of Delhi.
It was a very very lovely day when with ZZ and friends we decided to go some place to enjoy the lovely weather and thus Humayun's Tomb was visited. Stood on an elevated platform the red-stone structure is said to be the inspiration behind the architecture of Taj Mahal.
Awesome weather, lovely company, 2 photographers;) and click-happy grins with the wonderful background/ foreground where every corner shows view like this.

 next installment tomorrow..:)

Punctuality is a virtue and I lack it. Online at least. So without further ado, lets continue:

Lets continue..
Cook: What was your best recipe/dish of the year? Share it!

And as I looked at my photo folder, I noticed a lot of new experiments I did this year. Favorite recipe of the year should go to Som-Tam (Thai Green Papaya Salad). I had brought 2 raw-papayas from the kitchen garden of mother-in-law this diwali. Each papaya made one dessert and a big salad bowl.

Recipe is very simple (the reason I made it). I scouted google for its recipe and found this http://www.swapnascuisine.com/2011/05/green-papaya-salad-kappalanga-omakka.html which is almost how I made mine.

Enliven:  Was there a book or article that inspired you to make a change in your life this year? What was the source and what did you change?

I got to read a book from one of my father's friend. The book not only is a biography of a forgotten hero but also give a glimpse of the bygone society.Reading the book inspired me to someday write a book myself. (I woman can dream, right.)

Respond: Do you actively listen to your inner voice/conscience? Describe a time this year you heard and responded to it.

No, I don’t. I am a confused soul trying my best to simplify my life. Actively listening to my inner conscience would definitely help me but its mostly in the times of problem, when I try to look for the answers by looking inwards.

Triumph: How were you challenged by a project or goal this year? What did you learn from it?

Zindagi mein aisi bahut si mushkilein aayengi but always stand up for yourself. I shall not call that episode  triumph, because in a direct sense it  ultimately leads to loss for me but indirectly, I learnt so much. That there are people with inflated egos who take official things personally, try their best to damage you and create barriers on your way. That people would be nice to you since you have been nice to them is eye-wash. That there are people who will always be your strength, cherish them. That life is tough and unpredictable, just have faith, keep doing good and have belief in yourself.

Lose:  Did you have to say goodbye to a person, or even a cherished object, this year? Take a moment to celebrate the memory

I can only think of one person right now when it comes to loss. He was a mess worker in the girls hostel. Happy-go-lucky fellow who made many a parties possible, run for many a errands and always check on you if you skip your meal. Everyone in the hostel had nice memories of him. He died young and it was a sad news to hear the news.

Spend/Save: Are you richer or poorer this year, compared to last year?

Richer. Richer by age and the wisdom it brings;), by experience and yeah a few pennies richer monetarily for sure.

Tag: Weverb12

With just 2 posts in 2012, the blog had become a half-yearly event, BUT then there happens something in your life, which needs a mention in your blog. Right!! No..the blog was always in my mind when things happened to me but I just kept postponing it and hola, its December!!
delhte hi dekhte, 2012 is coming to an end.And even though 2012 has not been a favourite year and from last few months, office life is pain, it needs a summary. I have never documented anything like this earlier, but then in this blog, I found a link to Weverb12 and decide to hop on it.
And now that I have been 5 days late, let me write it all in a single post.

Dec 1: Compose
I have never written a haiku nor know its rules (except that its short, 3 lines etc) but let me describe my 2012:
Dark night:
Search for self
Unending, unnerving
May bliss be mine.

Dec 2: Watch
The movie of this year that I would recommend to a friend would be "English Vinglish"

Dec 3: Stay
I have a monkey mind and a monkey heart. I have heard a few comments about me stating that I look lost at times. So to truely stay in the moment is effort. I so want to do meditation, but then laziness has always been my second name. But this year, with so much negativity and politics, I think its my family and ZZ which helped me to stay in the moment. Also I am trying to meditate and form a relationship with God.

Dec 4: Experiment
This made me thinking. But recently on my office tour, I took a half-day detour and visited Amritsar to see Golden Temple. This was first solo travel as a tourist, and I loved it. Got to visit the Temple, some shopping at market, food at Brotheren da Dhaba. I ticked all points my To-Do list. Yes, I will definitely like to travel solo again.
Also I ran 5k Amateur Run. My first and only time. Just after my birthday. And alas, after that I stopped my daily practice. Yes, let this winter pass, and I will be on my tracks again.

Day 5: Fellowship
Online, I have become addicted to DIY (Do-It-Yourself) blogs like YoungHouseLove, BowerPower and I wasted spent many a hours surfing them. Did created a few things for home. While I love the arty-crafty stuff, when I see those people doing big-time renovations in their homes, I am awestruck.
Offline, there is no specific community I am engaged in. There have been phases: running, books etc. But nothing concrete. And what I get from it was also not concrete , just temporary satisfaction. so next year will devote more time in to these activities.

Hmmm, so this was my 101th post and my nth attempt to keep this blog journey continue.

random Realization

So finally today I took a stance and spoke for myself and asked for a sort of favour to the boss. I dont know what will happen tomorrow or in the long run, but I am kind of pleased with myself that finally after a lot of dilly-dallying I put forward my situation and asked for a way out.

Also I learnt an important lesson: Whenever you are in a position to help your subordinate, help. Whenever you are in a position to make or break someone's review, make it better. Whenever you are in a position to choose between forgive and forget and revenge, choose the former one. You may not realize it but small deeds like these will make a huge impact on your subordinate. 'Whenever possible, Be an open-minded Good Boss' as a retired GM said in an meeting.

The lesson that I learnt above doesnt mean that this was the response I received. But I would rather be what that ex-G.M than any other version.

All that I would like to believe at this moment is " All that happens is for good."

life is good..

Date: 17/01/2011

Good start in the office..no boss, not much work
The situation changed after lunch, work started pouring in from all directions..
Had to stay late in the office, work still not completed..
Came back home at around 8:00pm, overall Bad day at office..
Bhai A called and shared a good news..
Mood lifted and spent the rest half an hour chatting to him and parents..
Was in no mood to cook dinner..
but proposed to cook some short-cut dinner
ZZ vetoed and suggested he would cook "Biryani" (he cooks the awesomest biryani and knows this;))
and ordered me to chop vegetables..
While chopping vegetables, suddenly i decided to cook "gobhi manchurian"..
Strange!! after initial protest ZZ was made convinced that it wont take much time..
So at 9:00 pm in the night, in between the glimpses of "Jhalak Dikhla Ja", the two master-chefs of our household were cooking biryani and gobhi-manchurian..
end result- lip-smacking food.
ah, well, all s well that ends well..
hmm, life is good...

of changing beliefs

used to think what kinda custom it is..
wondered why should only woman should do that..
was determined that i will never do this..
after all it is not a part of "pahari" custom..
told everyone around me that i will not be the part of the fasting tribe..

but on the eve of Karva-chauth,this was what i was doing,

and
lo and behold,i was part of the 'fasting' bandwagon.

welcome idiot-box

So, in february last year, i wrote this post about the absence of idiot-box in my life. Strangely, I never felt the need and it used to surprise my friends and parents.'Kanjoos' they would say to me 'but how can you stay without tv, yaar?'. After marriage, since I and ZZ had to live in separate cities for some months, my austere life continued.
But in August, I changed location and moved in with ZZ. Our days of living as bachelors had come to an end and we have to make a "grihasthi";). Shopping started, priority list made of what to buy first and what is urgent. I had made him clear about my stance for TV and TV was at the bottom in our priority list. But then, everytime we were at Home-Town or Big-bazaar, I could spot ZZ looking dreamily at the TVs on display, enquiring about the features and offers. Every morning, while reading newspaper, he would exclaim on seeing ads" hey, great offers on Tv yaar..there's this new technology LED which.." You get the drift, right? Then, the big sporting extravaganza called CWG happened, and the need of TV was felt more.
One cant keep a man away from his toys for long, so I had some time back, have agreed of us buying it this Diwali. While I am the kind, who thinks a lot (and dont do much) and asks for opinions/ reviews before any purchase, ZZ is more of a instant kind of buyer, getting anything he likes without much thought. and in the same fashion, today morning ZZ declared we are going to get a TV today. The man kept his words, and right now, busy setting the TV while I write this post.

Stay tuned for the news of TV/ remote wars.

the month august-1

For a large part of August, this song described our situation very well...

This is one reason why i was not regular in this blog.ye alag baat hain ki in my new office i have no access to blogger....
